Another fine book from Gordon White. While truly a stand-alone volume, it is also really a great companion to The Chaos Protocols and Star.Ships.This volume is really Gordon White's 100% chaos magic book. Pieces of Eight continues what I liked about Chaos Protocols, providing a ton of food for thought on many subjects relating to magic. While I don't agree with everything Gordon writes (in part because I simply am not well read enough in some cases to have an opinion!) it always makes me think. This is one very sharp man's approach to practical magic taken to a logical limit, and a great view into a particular take on magic itself, and one I have a nice stack of notes and ideas to try out from. Not much better can be said in my opinion.
I think that this book + Chaos Protocols + Jason Miller's The Sorcerer's Secrets + Visual Magick by Jan Fries provide a rock solid ground for anyone interested in chaos magick, practical sorcery - whatever you'd like to call it- to rock & roll from. Top notch, and a very fun read as well.

White is prone to over exageration and the twisting of facts to suit his world view and personal fancies, but he is an excellent writer- very witty and entertaining. If you read magic and occult books for entertainment and as a study in the belief systems of the western bourgoise dispossessed, you will enjoy it immensly
In a world populated by dime-a-dozen occult 101 books and empty-shell publications, Gordon White's writing is a refreshingly insightful and relevant. Since stumbling on his "Rune Soup" blog years ago, I've been consistently impressed by Gordon's stuff, and this work is no exception. Following his previous publications of Star.Ships and Chaos Protocols - both of which were excellent, this work explores Chaos Magic and re-contextualizes it, in a sense, for our current times. The short book is an easy read, and full of potent tech, and equally potent suggestions for finding your own.
Chaos is not dead - it is vital. Thanks to authors like Gordon, the discussion started with the first emergence of Chaos Magic decades ago can continue in a time where being resourceful is crucial for survival.
In a world that is fluid, watch for sharks and learn to surf. This guy's a good ally.
Having followed Gordon via his fantastic blog Rune Soup for some years now, I am quick to jump on anything he writes. His comprehensive, insightful and witty worldview always takes me on a voyage far beyond the safety of the horizon.
This book is his first truly "practical" tome and highly recommended to anyone who wants to not only stay abreast of what's happening in the world but to rise above the noise and find beauty in chaos through participation.
Volume is defined as length, width, and depth. It's perhaps the wrong word to describe an eBook, which can't be said to occupy much space. Yet Gordon White's essay collection shares characteristics or properties with volume it occupies space. It takes up space in the mind, and takes up space in the lived experience of the body; it transforms how one thinks about economics and medicine; it raises even more complicated questions about magic, and the magician's relationship to its practice. As always with Gordon's work, I stop to put bits of it into practice, try it out on people in conversation, unpack it in my head. Well done.
If you are a fan of Gordon White and his blog runesoup.com then you probably don't need to read the reviews- you already know this book is awesome like everything else Gordon has written. If on the other hand haven't read his other books or blog but you have even the faintest interest in magic or in navigating this crazy world we live in successfully, then by all means get this book! You are going to thank me later (and you will most likely find yourself ordering his other two books too before you have even finished reading this one).
This book isn't very long or difficult to read but it is dense- much more dense than one originally realizes. It is definitely one of those books you'll want to re-read a few times, and every time you re-read it, different things will stand out. I found myself taking tons of notes while reading- not just quotes from the book itself but also tens of ideas that the book inspired. It is definitely a book that makes you think and gets your creative juices flowing. This is not a beginner's book in the sense that if you need a magic 101 guide this is not what this book is, but I cannot think of anyone -whether a long-time practitioner or someone who has just taken his first steps in magic- who will not benefit from it. Even if you are an absolute beginner, you will still gain a lot by reading the first part of the book.
From the practical enchantments, what stood out to me the most was the invocation to Wake the City (a call to place spirits), the ritual for the Tritopatores (unnamed, forgotten ancestral gods), as well as the Benediction of the Sybils.
The first thing that impressed me the most was Gordon's preliminary candidness about the format and nature of the book. The things that I would normally be irritated with--the rapid pace, the brevity of the book--the reader is made fully aware of in the very early beginnings. However, as I read further on, those qualities became much appreciated.
Gordon is hitting many major magical points in a quick but thorough manner, giving the reader much to chew on, and even more to digest especially if they are new to some of these topics.
The common misconceptions and detractors (and singularity) regarding chaos magic was the leading reason for my dismissal of the practice. But, now that Gordon has shed his high beams on the matter, I realize that my own magical practice has a lot more in common with chaos magic than I had originally anticipated.
Whether you're looking for a book on chaos magic or simply some solid suggestions and examples for refining your current practice, Pieces of Eight will most certainly be your proverbial ace up your sleeve. But, honestly...Gordon's witty and amusing writing style is the real gem in this jewel box!
